Sony Xperia Z1 Cracked screen/overheating

Just wondering if anyone else had had issues like this;
My 3 month old Sony Xperia Z1 recently overheated and froze. I managed to get it working again but was a little worried.
One week later i pulled the phone from my pocket to find the screen had cracked!
I hadnt dropped it, it was in a bumper case I was at a loss as to what had happened but the phone was unusable.
Took into Virgin (my contract) to see if they would fix or replace. They quoted me £110 to fix the screen as this was accidental damage. I did explain i hadnt dropped it, but they wouldnt seem to understand. The screen is supposed to be hard to break Gorilla Glass!!
I contacted Sony and explained and was asked to send the phone back for inspection. A few days later i received a quote back from Sony repair centre for £110 for accidental damage! Or £14.40 to retunr the phone to me un repaired :mad:
Now after some research I have discovered this is a common fault and was even recently on BBC Watchdog.
Anyone have any advise on how i can get this sorted? I am now without a phone, paying £40 a month contact and I am pretty annoyed

The Sony Xperia Z1? Ahhh, the indestructible phone. No, it's very destructible.
Watchdog's advice was to pressure Sony into repairing it for free. Sony have admitted that a "small number" of Z1's have experienced a screen failure. Well you insist that your Z1 is in that small number and that you did nothing wrong. Tell them there's no marks from being dropped. Tell them it's happening in your pocket. It seems the main reason for this cracking is due to heat changes, and yours was overheating.
Pressure Sony. Virgin won't do it though.0 -
Thanks. I'll get back in touch with Sony.
I even had a screen protector on the back of the phone which had almost fused to the phone due to the heat.
I cannot quite believe that they sent me a quote for over 100 quid.0 -

Well after 2 weeks of to-ing and fro-ing with Sony, Sony repair centre, emails telephone calls etc, finally got my phone repaired free of charge as 'a gesture of goodwill'
So while not admitting this common fault at the moment if you stick to your guns and keep pestering you should be able to get this fixed0 -
Good work, thanks for letting us know too!0
