House with 'South' Facing garden

Once can make a good approximation just by looking at the shadows and the sun.
How did we survive before apps?0 -
I'm another one with a S-SE facing garden and the sun disappears by late afternoon at this time of year.0

Same here, we have sun through the morning until late afternoon, but then it disappears round the hill in the evening.
OP, can you try to visit in the middle of the day, when the sun will be in the South and you can get an idea of the amount of sun your garden will get?0 -
South facing gardens don't get the sun at 7pm, try looking mid afternoon, that's the sweet spot for South facing gardens.
Op you do know the earth moves so the sun isn't always in the same place right?0 -
Yep, by 7pm the sun will be well round to the west. If it was in shadow at 12-noon then you could complain it wasn't south facing0

If you don't have a proper compass (not an app), can you work it out from a map (or Google Maps)? I know the new houses won't be on there yet, but you'll see the direction of the nearest road that is on the map, and can work out the orientation of your house compared to that...0

They certainly can, or I was hallucinating as well as barbecuing last night!
What would matter in a south facing plot is what's to the west & north west of it at that time. In my case, not a lot, but in an urban environment, or next to, say, woodland, one might well kiss the sun goodbye as early as 6pm at this time of year.0 -
Potentially stupid question, but which is the best way for a garden to face to make the most of the late afternoon/early evening sun then, south-west?0

SW is potentially good. The sun will be to the west of you when it goes down. Whether or not you can see it will depend on what else is to the west of you.0 -
