Sony Vaio keeps looking for Windows product key

My laptop keeps bringing up the following message although I have not entered a product key and I have this laptop since Christmas 2008,

"The WindowsVista Home Premium product key you typed is invalid for activation

Buy a new product key online

Type a different product key

Contact Sony Corporation to help resolve this problem."

Does anyone know why she is doing this and how I can resolve this matter because nothing I try seems to make any difference?

Yes, I have but I don't know how to do the other two things - I am afraid I need step by step instructions, sorry!

To reset activation, download and save this program; MBR Regenerator v4.5

Double click to run the program and when ready, click on the Start Regeneration System button.

I have never backed up this laptop. Will it be alright to run this program and get the back up done later?
