Yeah did get a bursary worth about an extra £1000. However it is always useful finding out when these are paid as mine didnt arrive till feb so would have struggled for the first term with little but then more for last few monthsYou would have also been entitled to a bursary from the uni; so would have probably had more than £20 a week.0 -

OK, I can see how you've misunderstood - I could have been clearer.0 -
I went to a London university and received no grant and the minimum maintenance loan as my parents earned above the threshold. This did not even cover my accommodation so I had nothing to live on.
Instead I worked all summer (earned about £2000) and used this to live on for the year. My parents helped financially with food but that's it.0 -
My parents paid £35 a week plus rent/bills/books. Consequently I managed to avoid taking the maintenance loan in one year.
It was notable though that my faculty would have you pulled up for a grilling if caught doing paid work for over 4 hours a week, if you could find the time for that it was felt you weren't working hard enough and would be given no support for poor results. Terms were longer than for the other faculties after the first couple of years also.0 -

My university had the same approach. My son is doing a medical degree so he doesn't get the usual holidays that many students have, upon taking his place he also has to agree not to take any paid work during term time.0 -
my son gets the minimum loan, can be frustrating to find that the only extra bursaries available are for people born is specific parts of the country or with parents who haven't been to university. I end up paying for accommodation which is about 5k a year.0

I started University with £2,000 in savings from working since i was 16 and saving half on birtday and christmas money etc for years.
I got the full loan (No grants available for my first 2 years at Uni - got £500 in last year - but still had the same amount of money as would have have with the full loan).
Worked every Saturday and extra hours at Christmas, Easter, summer etc.
The loan covered the essential costs - my £25 a week from working covered the drinking fund!
Left University with £2,000 in savings with no debt, and promptly bought a car!Weight loss challenge, lose 15lb in 6 weeks before Christmas.0
