Even if I turn the pilot lights down, do you think it would be more economical to shut off the gas during summer and use the immersion heater instead?

Many people do shut off the gas during the summer and use the immersion heater.

However all the new tariffs have a Daily Standing Charge(DSC) so that complicates matters.

It largely depends how much hot water(from the tank) you use. 12.5 kWh of gas used by your boiler will cost between 40p and 50p(ignoring DSC). For the same amount of money you can use 4kWh to 5kWh of 100% efficient electricity.

It is a coincidence that my wife and daughter have gone off for 2 weeks holiday together. So I shut off the gas and use the immersion heater for an hour - it helps that I have E7. I use an electric shower so only need enough to shave and wash the odd utensil that can't be put in the dishwasher.

    The 3 port positions are:

    A. To CH circuit(i.e radiators/UFH)

    B. to HW tank

    C. To both CH and HW tank.

There is no 'off' position where no water can pass through the valve.

The valve cannot under any circumstances shut off water to either the HW tank or CH circuit(or both). If it could you would have a potential explosion on your hands.
Spot on Cardew -had a think after reading your post -of course it couldn't "dead end" the boiler outflow:o
As the OP has intimated,he must have a flamethrower rather than a pilot light!:rotfl:
