Reclaiming back tax - records

Hello,

This is very disorganised of me I know but i'm hoping that somebody can help.

I had a tax rebate cheque given to me about 2005. I was living abroad at the time and asked my mother to pay it into my account.

I subsequently closed down the account and so cannot trace whether the cash ever went in. Will the tax office have any record of this cheque being debited? can they see back that far on my records? I've been told that i can't get tax records going back that far so have no idea if the cheque was ever paid into the account.

Any advice would be much appreciated

You could try the bank that held account with a subject access request. Fee £10? Or same with HMRC - not sure if they charge.
