Car Breakdown Gearbox

Hi
My husband drives a 5 year old Audi A6.
He works as a taxi driver which is the reason he has this car. We wouldn't normally be able to afford such a car but when he bought this the theory was that he would be able to earn more money by having it.
Anyway in April of this year the gearbox went on it. He was quoted from Audi a price of just under £10.000 to fix it. No way could we afford this price and were told of another garage that would be able to fix it much cheaper.
He was quoted just under £3.000 for a re conditioned one. We didn't have any choice really so let this garage fix it.
The price of the fix was bad enough but it took the garage over two weeks to fix it. Which obviously was two week loss of earnings.
Five weeks later the car broke down again. The computer on the car clearly said it was the gearbox.
It went back to the garage and we thought it would get fixed under warranty.
This was not so even though the car clearly said there was a gearbox fault the garage said it was the computer on the car and made us pay another £13.000. This time the garage took three weeks to fix it. Another 3 weeks of loss of earnings.
Today the car has broken down again and again the car clearly says it has a gearbox fault.
Can anyone offer any advice. We are so worried about this. We can't obviously get hold of the garage until tomorrow. My husband works 7 days a week so already we're into loss of earnings. Also if they tell us again something different is wrong how do we know if this is true or not.
We simply cannot afford another big bill like the last two but without the car my husband cannot work. We will be unable to pay out mortgage never mind the bills and eat.

£10K for a new gearbox!!!!!
Plenty of 6 year old A6s on Autotrader for that money! If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -
Seems to be common theme with automatics from that stable, you would probably be better to sell it on and get a 2007 onwards Merc E 220, which if serviced correctly should give you around 400k miles, which is the mileage a quality private hire company i know personally sells their cars at.0
