They still had me sign the tenancy agreement - I guess to make sure that I follow the rules too - but it's made very clear in there that my husband is the tenant and I'm just allowed to live here. They are a really good LA though and our LL is really laid back.
Hopefully if you go down a similar route you'll find somewhere to live. There are millions of unemployed people - whether through choice, disability, retirement or just unable to find a job - so I'm sure someone will understand your situation. Maybe before you set your mind on somewhere, find a LA who is understanding and willing to help you find something suitable. They'd be more likely to persuade a LL to accept you too if they weren't so judgmental of your situation - the ones you've dealt with so far may have been putting the LLs off with a negative attitude. I see your situation more as opting to take a career break, and that's very different to being unable or unwilling to find employment - after all, you've currently got a job. If your partner can afford to pay the rent, and you are living there as a permitted occupier, then I can't see any risk for the LA/LL.
Hope you find somewhere soon - and I know it's probably pushing it a little but you could even work on finding somewhere that allows pets(You need a LL like ours - not only do they not stereotype people who don't work, but they are cat lovers so have let us have two! I think we are really lucky but I'm very grateful too

The lasy said she'd have me sign my contract now
Did you and the landlords sign this tenancy agreement before you left?
Even though they wished to back out later, they may have already created a tenancy and can't back out without your mutual agreement.*Assuming you're in England or Wales.0 -
I popped my signature on both copies of the contract but none of the landlords popped their signature on it so probably not binding without that. I didn't get a copy to take away with me either as my partner had yet to sign on her moving day.0

It's funny, some letting agents are OK with this. We moved when both my kids were just barely in school so my OH was not in work as she was looking after the kids. The LA were great, they looked at me on my own and the agreement was drawn up just in my name even though my OH and kids were also on the agreement as permitted occupiers but it was only me as tenancy holder. It may be that it's because we have kids but the LA were great in this instance.
We moved a few months ago as well, my OH is now in part time employment and only earning about £100 per week but our new LA put her on the tenancy as well even though there is no way she could afford the rent on her own if we split up (she couldn't even afford half of it!)0
