I'm not far from Hemel - when I go to London I'll either get the train from Borehamwood (Zone 6) or the tube from Stanmore (Zone 5). Both have a reasonable size car park, but there are often places to park near Stanmore tube for free on a Sunday. Stanmore is convenient to get to the Shrek show since it's on the Jubilee line and you can go all the way to Westminster without changing. Stanmore is also not far from the M1 and easy to drive to from Hemel.

Who would drive from Hemel to Greenwich? It's the wrong side of London and would take you an hour an a half to get there.

I only live one junction from Hemel so know the travel around here pretty well. There's actually a great snow arena there that might be good to try out if any of you ski. I think you can also take the kids sledging.

Someone like me who doesn't know where anything is lol!

Thanks for your reply - sounds like a sensible option
  • It is entirely possible to just drive into London and park on a Sunday. We knew someone who had a baby at the Portland Hospital, so we drove down to visit them and parked right outside ... This was really close to Oxford Circus.

It's not something we've tried often, and I don't know why we don't, but I guess we don't actually go into 'town' much.

There might be some apps that help you find free parking you could try out.

Just to add, this time we are staying In Hemel Hempstead - so the other option is to save the hassle of driving and get the train instead. Last time we drove to Hillingdon and got the train in from there - would it be worth doing the same again, or is there a nearer Zone 6 station to Hemel Hempstead.

    Thanks

If I were you, this time I would drive down the M1 from Hemel to Stanmore tube station.

Stanmore tube station is less than two miles from junction 4 of the M1, has a large carpark and is at the end of the Jubilee Line.

Parking at Stanmore tube station on a Sunday costs only £1.50. Although the congestion charge is not applicable at wekends and parking restrictions in London are lifted in some parts of roads on a Sunday, parking is till limited.

For travel this time use a contactless bank card for each adult instead of Travelcard as it has a cheaper daily off peak cap.
  • I tend to park on Merrion Avenue, which is just next to the station and only has Monday-Friday parking restrictions. Google map: https://goo.gl/maps/RLjdEqYrQhA2

Watch out if there is a game/event on at Wembely, as a lot of people park and travel from Stanmore.
