China doesn't appeal to me either .......and just because other people love it isn't a good enough reason. Plenty of people love crunchy peanut butter but I don't.......
In your shoes I'd head to Asia or South Africa.
I've travelled extensively in SE Asia but China has never appealed. Maybe it's just too different and I'd be worried about language problems. I'm going to Hong Kong later this year for the first time and I'm looking forward to that but it is the Westernised version of China.
Then again, everyone likes different things. For me, the suggestion of trekking in Nepal would be something of of nightmares. I like my holidays to be relaxing not spent hiking up a mountain! I was was talked into doing a half day trek in Chiang Mai and thought I was going to die from the heat and humidity. Just point me to somewhere that sells cold beer and I'll be happening watching the world pass.0
