Car insurance / New driver / 28 Years Old

Hi everybody,

So I’m 28 years old (male) currently taking driving lessons and nearing my practical test very soon. I’ve been using a few comparison websites to find the best quotes online. The best quote was £1,744.27 (dated 07/07/2014) for a VAUXHALL CORSA CLUB 12V (1.0 litre) from Quinn Direct. I checked again today (19/07/14) and found the quote to be £2,211.47. A whooping £467.02 more than the original quotes.

I was wondering if anyone could share some light on this? Will the quote fall again to under £2000 again? Also is there anymore tips that you could give me to get it down further?

(Also to note. I’ve added my friend (13 NCD) has the additional driver.)

Thanks you very much for you help.

A Corsa wont be the cheapest car to insure. Too many young drivers choose them and have claims.

Try a Ford KA, Daewoo Matiz, Fiat Seicento, VW Lupo, Citroen C1 etc.

I found adding a male driver made little difference, Adding a nan made the biggest difference.

Around £1300 for an 18 year old just passed. So yours should be much cheaper. But the postcode maybe your issue.

Search for "old people" cars. My Fiancee found a Honda Jazz cheapest to insure, mainly as she seems to be the only person under the age of 60 ever to drive one!

But yeah, I found that too. Found quotes for £1800 when I passed my test, bought the car, and it was up at £2300.

That's because it is a different quote.

The quote you have for being a learner with a provisional licence will be lower because you'll only ever be driving with a grown up in the car with you.

Once you pass your test and are now able to drive on your own, there's a risk you'll start bouncing off lampposts and other cars to guide you down the road. The increased risk will be reflected in a premium increase.

  • Thanks for everyone's replies including tips on picking the right car etc. Just to be clear. I quoted both quotes as having a full UK license. So I don't know why it went up so much in just over a week with Quinn Direct. My postcode is rated 3 stars out of 6. So it's in the middle.

Its the middle for that insurer. Other insurers may rate it differently.

My previous insurer wouldnt touch anyone with a Manchester or Oldham postcode.
