Npower - An unforeseen energy bill reminder

I have received two reminders from npower. One for gas at 400 and one for Electric at 59. I had no idea these would arrive and I'm shocked to owe anything.

I had a property 13 months ago and npower sent a bill to my new address to address the amount left on the account to cover what my direct debit didn't. At the time I was shocked. Rang them. Complained and begrudgingly paid and gave them my details. Or so I thought.

Now I have seen received a reminder from a year ago and totally out of the blue. I have rang npower to say I've paid it at the time and they say they haven't received anything, despite no communication at all during a year to say they didn't received it. All they said was to ring my bank and prove it. I've rang my bank today and they say they can't find any evidence from them. However they have also said that they can't check old accounts.

I can't afford to pay this unexpected bill. I find it extremely strange that I gave them my details a year ago. Nothing has happened since and then I receive a bill. The time gap and inbetween me thinking I've paid it.

Has anyone been in a situation like this? Or offer any advice?

Thank you in advance.

Are you saying you gave Npower your bank details with a view to them taking the money using the old Direct Debit?(which should have been cancelled.)

If not, giving NPower your details is useless unless you sign a Direct Debit Mandate.

Giving a firm(or a person) your bank details is meaningless for taking money from your account. For instance you might give me your bank details so I can pay you money I owe; I certainly couldn't get the bank to pay me money from your account.

You must make arrangements to pay by cheque, bank transfer of debit card.
