Need help from those who work with kids!

I'm want to take a childcare/education course in September. In order to take the class I need to volunteer or work with children. Since I know I won't be able to find a paying job, I am going to volunteer at a prison play program. I'm really worried I won't be able to volunteer, because my current employer doesn't give references if you've worked there under 6 months, I've been there almost a month. He can only say I work there. I don't want them to think I'm hiding something, because they won't give me a reference. I really want to take this course and volunteer this year and I don't want my manager to ruin that because of a lame company rule..

It's really worrying me..

Do you also need to be CRB checked also? What about references from school or college, or a previous employer or somebody that you know very well?

I'm not worried about a CRB check, just my current employer not wanting to give me a reference. I can get one from a previous employer and other people, I just didn't know if they wanted on from my current employer.

get several. get ones from your previous employers which will be more indepth, but then get the one from your current one too..

I'm sure if you explain to them they wont reference you for as you've not been there that long they can work around it, if it was me, i'd just phone them and ask (if i was employing you)

My current employer will only say I work there, they won't give me a reference. Will that be a problem. I can get references from other employers and my old law tutor.

I called on Friday, but nobody called me back yet. I'll call again on Monday.

sorry, i meant if i was employing people and one said their last employer wont reference i'd phone the company anyway.

chocolate - confirming dates of employment is often enough for referencing. It confirms you were where you say you were. The referee should explain that it's not company policy to give more info when employees have shorter service - rather than let their silence be construed as something wrong.
