There is a premium if one of you works over 30 hours per week, but with the extra income you earn it may not work out any more!

  • It wouldnt make any difference to the WTC, as they look at you as a HH, so you get one 16-30 hours element, and one 30+ hours element, so you are already getting both. If you have children and need to use childcare though, then you would both need to be working 30+ hours.

Its important though, to realise that (from a purely financial point of view) you'll always be better off working more hours, as the income gained through working extra hours will always be more the the tax credits lost through earning more. Obviously, its important to get the work/life balance right as well though!

You don't need to both work 30+ hrs to get the childcare element

The Working tax Credit (Entitlement and Maximum Rate) Regulations 2002, Reg. 13 (1)

To qualify for a child care element the claimant:
    • must be 16 or over, and
    • lone parents must be in qualifying remunerative work for 16 hours or more a week, or
    • both members of a couple must be in qualifying remunerative work for 16 hours or more a week, or
    • one member of the couple must be in qualifying remunerative work for 16 hours or more a week and the other
    • is incapacitated
    • is an inpatient in hospital, or
    • is in prison (whether serving a custodial sentence or remanded in custody awaiting trial or sentence)
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
