Do the terms and conditions of his tenancy say who is responsible for the maintenance of the garage?
Home insurance won't cover damage to vehicles, nor usually to buildings which aren't within the curtilage of the house. Some policies exclude cover for outbuildings. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -

Why do people think they can claim from others for simple things like this?
So a bit breaks off a door and dents a car. That's just bad luck, nobody's fault!
This claims culture is sick.
You're a right spanner aren't you? When you rent a house, there are certain maintenance requirements that the landlord lives up to. If I rent a garage from the council, I would expect the door to be in full working condition. Why is it their fault for the door breaking? Because it's their !!!!ing garage, they're charging you to rent it and therefore it's their responsibility to make sure it's working correctly for the customer.
I would absolutely claim. Take photos of the damage and contact the council immediately.0 -
Don't know which Council you are with, but the following ones say they are not liable for any loss or damage to any property left in the garages they let. They recommend additional insurance.

Loads of results on google, most, if not all of them say no liability to damage/loss in using the garage.0 -
They can say that but it still doesn't remove their responsibility to rent something that is correctly maintained.rustyboy21 wrote: »Don't know which Council you are with, but the following ones say they are not liable for any loss or damage to any property left in the garages they let. I`m sure you would be saying this if it were your car.0 -

How about if a wheel fell off a car and that car then drove into you or a family member? I assume that you would think it just bad luck and you wouldn't want to try to claim from their insurance would you?0 -
