Nationwide, not on my side !!!

I went to my local Nationwide to open an account last week. Just the basic card cash account nothing fancy. I choose this bank after reading on this website that bankrupts can get accounts here. Today I opened a letter from them advising me that my application was unsuccessful as I didn't meet their criteria of being clear of bankruptcy for 5 years.
I phoned their helpline who said it must be applied for online, just did that and got refused. I have a cheque for £80 I need to cash or pay into a bank. It is from eon and is a refund from having over payed on my electric.
Can anyone offer any help with this please? Also Martin Lewis, What is going on with the Nationwide???

Not sure what to advise re which bank to approach if any, as I don't have any experience with bankruptcy.
However, if you can't open a bank account you could always take it to one of them payday advance shops. You certainly won't get the full £80 for it, but it will be better than nothing.
I did it once when someone paid me a cheque when buying my car and I desperately needed the money for the car I was buying (stupid mistake on my part to accept it, never again!) and the fees weren't actually as bad as I expected.0 -
I thought 'Barclays' was the only option for un discharged (co-op if a customer prior to BR)

I've not heard of Nationwide being bankrupt friendly...
I thought your high street bank options were the Co Op before you declared or Barclays if you are already BR.0 -
will probably try Barclays next then :-l0

You can open an account with Nationwide once you are discharged, I did it online without a problem, I think you have misread about them being BR friendly as I have never seen any post stating such a fact, but there a few about being able to get an account once your BR is over.:pB&SC No. 298

Nationwide USED to be bankrupt friendly, about 4 or 5 years ago from memory. Possibly you read a really old post?0

Shouldn't you be sending that cheque to the OR..? It's likely to be an asset in your bankruptcy.0
