Bad credit??? please help

Options
I have never had a bad credit rating but yesterday got refused an account with British gas due to bad credit.

I have recently taken out on my first mortgage and not made any payments yet.

Could this be why I have been refused credit??? I cannot think of any other possible explanation, If this is the case how long should I leave it before I try again?

Thanks

You've never had a bad credit rating and you never will, because credit ratings do not exist.

What exactly did the rejection say? It certainly won't say because of "bad credit".

Some people are rejected for products after a mortgage since it is a huge change in someone's personal circumstances and they want to see how you cope before allowing more. HOWEVER, in this case I suspect you may have been refused if you are not yet shown as being on the electoral roll.

Have you checked your credit files to see what data is recorded there?
  • They said they couldn't give me a reason just that I had failed the credit check.

I am on electrol roll and when I check my credit with various credit check companies a couple of months ago before getting a mortgage it was very good

    Thanks for replying

When you say your credit was "very good" are you referring to the "score" they display? If so, these have no meaning in the real world and should be ignored.

You need to find out if your credit files are definitely showing you as registered on the electoral roll at your new address. Registering for it with the local authorities and them being shown on reports are two different matters. It can take a few months to show as you being registered at your new address and since you last checked your files before the mortgage then you should do so again to check what's on there.
  • Not sure but on a seperate note try flow energy don't do credit checks, well didn't last year you should be able to ask them first if in any doubt and maybe check your report as a precaution, that's what I would do, BG always seem a funny mob xx
  • I haven't left my old house yet so on electrol role here still

My new property has pay as you go meters, I needed a credit check to change them to normal meters, I need to prove I can pay a bill!!! Can't change to another supplier until meters are changed otherwise I get charged from other companies to change the meters.
