I would imagine they can, it's just that the front of a vehicle tends to give a better return. Have a look at LIDAR. You can query what was used, how it was used and when it was last calibrated. Did you not know the speed you were travelling at? From good ol' Wiki.

Capabilities: LiDAR can be used to measure vehicles coming toward the LiDAR gun or moving away from the LiDAR gun. More often it is used to measure the target vehicle coming toward the LiDAR gun because this allows the police officer, who may be operating alone, to wave the driver down for ticketing/arrest. :cool:

I was tugged by a plod leaping out the hedge in Nottingham a few months the signs were 40 yet a half hidden sign in a bush said it had been reduced don't take the signs off the posts obviously when I stopped over they waddled and asked me if I knew why I was stopped I said no they told me why and when I asked what speed I was doing they couldn't tell me I was then reminded I was under caution to which I replied that they had done their job wrong as you can't tell someone they are under caution half way throu a incident they didn't half get stroppy transpired I was doin 37 and it's off to the naughty boys school I go this Tuesday

with a hand held gun the normal procedure is to stop you at the time of the offence and issue a fixed penalty at the side of the road

basic hand held hair dryer type speed guns dont normally record photographic or video evidence of the offence, a NIP can be issued after the alleged offence but i am sure they would need to have photo or video evidence to back the NIP

They can attach a small camera to the hand held gun.

Only option is to just sweat it out for the next 14 days and if nothing comes through the post to the registered keeper you are in the clear.

Did they actually caution you?

'You do not have to say anything but it may harm your defence if you do not mention, when questioned, something which you later rely on in court. Anything you do say may be given in evidence'

Minor deviations from the wording are allowed but the meaning of what they say must be as above.

If they didn't give you that caution then reminding you that you were under caution was meaningless.

At an indicated 33 you are unlikely to hear anything.
