Ok , couple of simple questions for any fellow golfers.
Thinking of using my smart phone as a gps range finder .
1) would it cost me any money/ data , i'm on a PAYG
i.e does a GPS signal costs, thinking not as its not via the web??
2) any recommendations for the FREE APP?
Did visit Play store and there are a number, but willing to take advice.
I use a 3 sim card, but am trying to keep the cost down, as I need the money to pay for all the lost golf balls
TIA

A relative who plays golf has a GPS range finder watch similar to this
I am aware that after the initial outlay there is no regular costs. Not sure if it would suit you better, he swears by it, better than carrying a mobile or tablet etc. plus you can use it on thousands of courses worldwide0 -

Why would this be any more accurate than a printed stroke saver / yardage guide? Yes, we've all heard the (possibly urban myth) about Bernhard Langer asking if the measure to the sprinkler head was taken to the front or the back of the head, but please......
Besides which, isn't it against the rules, and likely to get you disqualified in competition?0 -

Against the rules? only on some of the competitions, clearly announced
( and I enter very few, as I am rubbish at the game)
printed stroke saver ? ....... its golf . a game for those who have more money than sense, who else spends a fortune to hit a silly ball into a hole, just to pick it up and try to do it again
But thanks for the input...... have you been talking to my kids?0 -
i use the swing by swing app on an iphone and it is excellent once mastered. all on gps, no data charges BUT ensure you have afully charged battery in your phone as the usage is high.
there is an android version of the app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.swingbyswing&hl=en_GB
try it it's free.

Since a GPS signal is accurate only to several metres, probably more than 10, depending on several factors, is that good enough for you?0
