What is the Best/Worst Job you have ever had?

  • I have had so many horrible jobs...

I worked as a PA for a company director, to find that he just slept and snored at his desk and didn't pay bills on time when I advised they were due.

I worked for a debt management company but it was one of those ones that charged for the service. If you got a debtor who made an query, you would have to lead them down the garden path, make them think they were getting a loan but tell me at the end of the call that it would be a debt management plan they would be offered. I didn't find it was ethical, so I left.

I worked security for a supermarket and it was the most boring, mind-numbing, soul destroying job known to man, the store was in a rough area and the clientele were very much to be desired. I would suggest to management to secure the expensive items, such as expensive creams behind a manned counter... but no, they said they wanted the customer to have the freedom to shop with no kerfuffle! That supermarket nationwide is having a mass redundancy of the managers.

I worked in a complaints department for a famous 4x4 vehicle manufacturer. That was horrible because I would do everything I could for the customer, then it would have to get passed to a manager for them to do what they have to and they would just procrastinate and I would have to explain to the customer what the hold up was.

Ironically, the best job I have ever had is my current one. As a cleaner. I love it, I am doing what I enjoy in general, I am left alone, I only see my area manager once a month. I can listen to my music as I work, I only work part time. I manage my time well and I am very much a perfectionist. I have never had any issues or complaints here. However, the office workers I clean on behalf of love me, they make my hot drinks and things like that. They even vent their frustrations about working there to me, when they do that I feel like a priest at confession!

Worst job by far: working for aspace manufacturing (kids furniture manufacturer). The so-called production manager at the time was nothing but a tyrant and a bully, who like to surround him self with yes men. Horrible, horrible place with equally as horrible people. CreTures with male genitals, nothing more!

The worst job I had was an assembly line job. On your feet for 6/7 hours a day isnt good, didnt get a chance to have a quick drink nor rest your feet as the line was really fast, only time if I was luck was when there was a fault with the machine in which case you could have a rest whlst the machine was looked at.

Best job or jobs even would have to be both working in supermarkets, enjoyed my time at both employers, great people to work with and who I still keep in contact with.

I had a few jobs I loved- one was working in insurance for a certain large high street bank and the other was working as a receptionist for a certain large chain of hotels :D
Both of those jobs I got into some very very funny scrapes and in one met my best friend- who I call my sister as were so close. We were real partners in crime and got up to some absolutely horrific stuff behind the manager's back :D however they did have their downsides- awful hours for terrible pay and nasty guests. The first job had loads of perks- part time hours for full time pay and I worked with a brilliant bunch of people.
Worst job? I've had a lot of bad jobs. Could be either hospital cleaning where the work was hard and thankless and the boss was a right old witch who told lies on my reference; telesales (only lasted one day, I don't do cold calling) working in a sports shop (they got rid of me slyly by keep putting me in to do hours they knew I couldn't do then telling me to skip lectures and when I wouldnt they got rid of me- I got a job in their bitterest rivals who were brilliant- they asked for a copy of my timetable so they would know never to rota me in when I had lectures and they gave me virtually full time work in the summer)

Best job -one I'm doing now. I'm an editor in a publishing company. Took me 8 months to escape academia and get a job in the field and I took a massive wage cut. But it's worth it. Worse job - a catering assistant in a factory that made cardboard boxes. It was a temp job over the summer when i was a student and most of the men were leery and i was groped daily. Disgusting
  • Best job: my current one - in a field I actually have some commitment to, based on a hospital site with nice colleagues and a cheap canteen, with the option of working a couple of days a week at an office 15 minutes walk from home (hospital is 3.5 miles away, cycling distance). 9-5 rarely having to stay late, and a flexible boss who's supportive of development and learning.

Worst job: transcribing recorded conversations between mystery shoppers and dodgy salesmen. The recordings were awful, the transcription software rarely worked and the other staff were surly and miserable (unsurprisingly :D )
If you lend someone £20 and never see them again, it was probably £20 well spent...

What does a contractor do? Is it building? Takes me nearly 3 weeks to earn £500 lol.

I write iPad and iPhone apps in a very specialised field. It's the only thing I can do now as I'm stuck in a wheelchair, and luckily I do it very well :)

best - stewarding freshers week at university - involved drinking and meeting girls, what more can you ask for

worse - working for a genuine office psychopath, very disturbed individual, drunk on the power and highly abusive.

current job far nearer scenario 1 than scenario 2, no girls, no beer, but sane and civilised!
