what to put in pots?

I've just been given some garden pots, what can I plant in them at this time of year? I would like something to give some colour through the autumn and winter if possible. Also not too expensive. Any ideas?

pansies or violas will flower at least once, possibly more, in pots.
    Cyclamen are good for autumn/winter.

I was actually about to post a very similar post to this... Figured I could just add on here!

We moved in to this house a few months ago. Our garden doesn't have any flower beds at the moment, and although I would like to change this, it's not something viable for this year. Instead I'm trying to brighten it up a bit with a few pots.

I'm thinking some Lavender (I love the scent and the colour). And I'm going to have a look and see if Aldi still have those chrysanthemums. But what other flowers could I use that will also attract 'good' insects to the garden such as bees and butterflies?

Oh, there are also a couple of hanging basket brackets on the wall that I could use, but I've never made up hanging baskets before... Any ideas on what I can use?
