I have broadband internet with Orange and have had it for a good few years since they were Wanadoo. It isnt very fast broadband (about 512kb) but im happy with it except that sometimes when i have been online for a long time the internet stops working. When i run the check thing on MSN messenger (dont know what its called) it says that the Gateway is closed. Does this mean that Orange has closed my internet for a period as i am online too much?
When i started my contract there were no "fair usaged policys" so if they are doing this arnt they breaking the contract?
If so im going to move internet provider because i think i pay alot anyway for 512kb (about £17) and this may just be the kick i need to get me to move from Orange to somewhere cheaper.
Are Orange cutting off my internet for a period of time?

Gateway would probably mean your modem/ router. Whatr is your physical set up for the connection as I would say that either something is failing or it isn't set up right. My gateway would be my SACM or possibly my router.0

Suggest you shop around for a better broadband package, take a look at www.thinkbroadband.com or any similar broadband comparisons website.0

Best checking hardware first though, bit of a waste going through hassle of changing only to find same problem.
BTW I'm assuming you mean 512 kb/s not 512 Mb."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

an few simple dos commands can help you work out where the problem is if you are using a router. the gateway usually refers to your router but it could also refer to your ISP if you are useing a USB modem as when you connect they issue you with a gateway address. the commands work for both anyway.
click start, then run and enter cmd, click ok
In the black window type ipconfig/all and hit enter
it will display your connection setting
IP address
Subnet mask
gateway address
DHCP server
DNS server addreses
If you are useing a router the ip addreses will be somthing like 192.168.xxx.xxx subnet 255.255.255.0, gateway 192.168.xxx.xxx and dns is likley to be the same as the gateway and DHCP server.
If you get somthing else then your proberbly useing a USB modem
you can use the ping command to test the connection to your gateway
type ping 192.168.xxx.xxx (gateway address)
hopfully you will receive 4 reply's telling you the connection to the router is ok check the sumary at the end of the ping test packets sent 4 received 4 lost 0 is good anything else indicates a problem.
you can also do the same if you useing a USB modem, if you get the full set of details but can't ping the gateway or dns servers then therre is usually a problem with your ISP0 -

Ye i do mean 512kb was very late when i wrote this:rotfl:
So you think its something to do with my hardware rather than the internet?
If so how come the internet is fine and works and then just cuts off for say 1 hour and then works again even though i have not done anything differently and my router hasnt been touched or changed at all?
I do need a new router actually tbh as this one i have is pretty old and about worn. Can anyone reccomend and good, reasonably priced one?
Thanks for all your helpOffical MSE Fantasy League Member:beer:0 -
I also have always been with the same ISP, since they were called freeserve then wanadoo then Orange. Only when Orange took over I started experiencing problems due to "outage" and often I was without bb for a whole day. I was on 2MB.
I upgraded about 3 months ago to their 8MB and must say I've had no problems since.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0
