PPI and Bank lost my documents

Took out PPI with a loan in 2005, in 2008 became ill, put in a claim and PPI commenced payments. Heard absoluely nothing more from bank nor insurance company. The loan period was 5 years so finished in 2010.
2012 I was contacted by a debt recovery company about an unpaid bank loan. Told them I had PPI on that loan. They asked me to prove it, I enquired at the bank and insurance company about the loan and PPI. The bank/insurance company told me they dont have my file and cannot clarify anything. They have asked me to resubmit a claim and allow them to access my medical records, then they will give further consideration to my claim.
I was hounded by the debt collectors who never had any proof I owed this money. The Bank don't have any records.
What should I do?
Many thanks for any help or advice.

Have you sent them a SAR and £10 to see what's left?
If you post on the debt free board you'll have more help with the DCAs.Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi0 -
It sounds like you put in a claim in 2008 and it started to pay out, all ok at this point. Only thing is these policies only usually pay out for up to 12 months at a time, so it sounds like your claimed ceased and as you weren't making payments it was eventually passed over to debt collectors.
Or did you have another loan?
Its odd that you say you never received any letters. really???0 -
Thank you for your reply, it was only one loan. The PPI didnt say anything about only paying for 1 year. Yes it is strange looking back that there was no correspondence at all, no statements either.
The amount of money the debt collectors claimed I owe was almost the total amount of the original loan, but after paying over 70% of the loan back plus the PPI payments which I know were made, leaving less than 12% outstanding, how that inflated back up to 80% of the original loan amount blah blah blah. Anyway where did the bank get there figures from to pass over to the loan company. They have no records!!!
DONT THEY HAVE TO HAVE PROOF OF A DEBT BEFORE THEY INSTRUCT DEBT COLLECTORS?0
