Garage Construction

Options
Hi all,

We bought a house without a garage 6 months ago and are having one built at the moment. The builders have finally started work this week but I've noticed today that they are laying bricks without any breezeblock underneath. I am not an expert on this, so if someone understands building construction, could you please tell me if there should be breezeblock underneath bricks in a garage or are all garages normally built with single brick walls?

Many thanks

When you say underneath, you mean they're building a single skin wall, instead of a wall with two skins - internally breeze block and externally brick? Sounds fine to me for a utility building, unless its substantial. Will you use it as a garage, or were you planning to heat it, perhaps as a den or something?

Yes, I mean a single skin wall. The reason I am asking is because in our previous house, the garage had breezeblock with brick laid over it so to speak but this may have been because the garage was attached to the house. The one we are building now isn't going to be attached to the house.

We are intending to use it as a garage but it's a double garage, so I am not sure whether it should have breezeblock or not. Thanks for your reply.

General reason for double skin is for insulation and water penetration reasons not really structural ones - so unless you were planning to use it for something other than storing cars and other "junk" in, there isn't an obvious reason to spend more on a double skin.

  • Since you are only using it as a garage the fact that it is a single skin wall will not cause any problem. In case if you are planning to change it into a storage den or something then a double shin wall will be better. If you have any plans like that, you can speak to the workers about it.
