No Claims Bonus Lost When No Insurance?

Hi,
I've been driving for a number of years and have collected up about 10yrs of No Claims bonus.
I'm now looking to sell my car and wont be replacing it. As a result, for the first time in ages, I'll have no car insurance.
Later on, I may decide to purchase and insure another car.
At that point, can I still use my No Claims bonus frozen to the years I had insurance (so, still 10 years), or is the bonus lost because I didn't maintain insurance continuously?
Can brokers make a difference here?
Thanks,

Most insurers will accept a gap of up to two years between policies, but after that your old NCB becomes invalid. Co-op will accept three years, but they're the exception rather than the rule, and there's no guarantee that they'll still be accepting 3 years in 2017.
Couples who are switching from two cars to one can maintain both NCBs by alternating between each other as policyholders each year, but if you're single it's trickier.0 -

I've also heard of people taking out a policy every couple of years with a company who charges a minimal cancellation fee, then cancelling the policy aftera few days - the cancellation letter will have the current date and confirm the existing NCD. Not sure how well this works in practice, and I assume people lie about being the registered owner/keeper as they're unlikely to register a vehicle in their name just to pull off this ruse...0
