Does this sound right re Mira shower installation?

Hi there we are having problems with our Mira Escape shower. We have twice in the last couple of years replaced the heat switch (thermostat). The second time was only a few weeks ago and twice since then it has reverted to producing only cold water. Both times the plumber has come out and done some cleaning and said that was affecting the contact and it worked fine for about 2 weeks the first time but only 5 days the second time.
However it has failed again and we have decided to bite the bullet and get a Mira engineer out.
When we rang to book an appointment they said the problem will probably have been caused by condensation owing to the fact that the unit has been siliconed in at the top and round the sides.
We took his word for it but I have been "googling" it and there seems to be differing views.
Has anyone heard of this causing such problems before?

    what a crock of s...
apart from the screw holes the back is sealed to prevent water ingress, i always seal around the shower with sealant (apart from the bottom) & I've never had your problem
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

I must say the instruction manuals for Mira showers do specifically say not to seal around the shower box (have only just looked as we paid a plumber to install it)

Follow the MI - I never silicone if the MI say not to - simples!

Not that that helps in the slightest with your problem :(

    Hope it's now sorted.

Ouch, at that kind of price, a new shower would not cost much more on eBay. I know retail prices are very high for Mira showers but they can be found for much cheaper. Argos were selling a reasonable Mira shower for about what they intend charging to come and look at yours. Mira do have 2 year guarantees I believe. Is your shower older than that?

yes it's 7 years old but has caused us lots of headaches with a leak and then this. It only gets used twice a day. I saw the one in Argos but seem to remember it didn't get great reviews and a plumber told us that Mira are now using cheaper plastic parts from China so the newer ones would be less robust.

When we had Mira shower fitted our plumber said he never seals round them as it may void the warranty if not done to Mira specifications.

Mira showers are still fairly expensive but can be picked up new on ebay for around £200.

However showers can be purchased for £50-£60 so whether it is really worth spending so much on a shower is a question worth asking. It's just the cost of installing it and whether it affects any tiling/pipework etc.
