Opening seal packaging in a shop

I checked the quality of an item (bungee) in a shop by neatly opening the sealed packaging. I didn’t think the elastic was suitable so I put it back on the shelf. To my surprise a security guard stop me at the exit and insisted I paid for it in full. Have I done wrong? What if any are my rights in this case?

I always prefer my seals to be wrapped in cellophane.

As for the security guard saying you have to pay for it, if you've damaged the packaging they may not be able to sell it at it's full price. Maybe offer a concession.
  • The rules on 'breakages' are that you are meant to pay the 'cost' price

You should certainly check with staff before opening a sealed product

Yes, that is my understanding too.
It does however raise an interesting question in the OP's case.
After having 'broken' the packaging and maybe deciding the goods were suitable, could the OP then be charged the (lower) 'cost' price rather than the retail price?

    I agree.

And presumably the breaker is entitled to keep the broken goods.
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.
