Strange how a previous leak in an exhaust can translate into a cat failure. Or is it bloody obvious of a spanner twirler talking a sap into an unnecessary replacement part?

So much for a minor leak from last year. I hope someone can make sense of all this.

I can - you ignored it for a year, and the leak got bigger. Leaks don't magically repair themselves, so logically a leak is going to increase in size when you don't take remedial action.

Thanks for the reply. I can't understand how this leak turned into a new cat either.

The car was running perfectly. Nothing to suggest there was a problem even a big one. The damn car is only used twice a week to go to a voluntery job and the total milage for those 20.
I was not told that the exhaust was on the way out. Also it passed the emission test.

Yes, you were. It was an advisory on last year's MOT.

If you had been told last year the exhaust is getting old then the only repair would have been a replacement which would be no cheaper than it is now.

Regular short journeys increase the condensation in the exhaust which causes rust.

Paying to own a car to do such low annual mileage when you have limited money is not mse. Add up what you pay annually for tax, insurance, maintenance and fuel. Consider a bus, push bike, taxi or car share.

Also your old cat is still worth a bit, so make sure keep it, and then get paid for scrapping it, or the garage keeps it and they should pay you for it, (or knock a bit of the bill for the new one)

'minor leak of exhaust gases (7.1.21)' - still not seeing 'old' and 'on the way out ' there. Do some of you just automatically change everything without investigating, and assume 'a new one will fix it?' Not very mse.

No she wasn't. There was an advisory, "front exhaust has minor leak of exhaust gases". This is not the same as being told the exhaust system is old and may fail soon.
You seem very keen to berate the op.

On a 13yo car? Let's face it, Occam's Razor applies as much here as it ever does. It _might_ be a failed sealing ring or gasket, yes. But... it isn't. You know it isn't. I know it isn't.

And, looking at those exhaust parts diagrams, the cat and downpipe are one piece, so replacement of the blowing downpipe automatically means replacement of the cat.

    Point out reality, y'mean?
