Sold car. Buyer provided I incorrect/false address details on V5C. What now?
My dad sold a car about a month ago via a private ad in the local paper. Guy called, came and looked at it and bought it there and then. It was just a 2001 Volvo Estate. Buyer filled in his details on the V5C, my dad gave him the paper slip section and posted off the V5C the same day. Thought nothing more of it until today he got a letter from the DVLA stating they couldn't issue a new certificate as they don't have the full/correct address for the the new keeper and to provide the details.
My dad has absolutely no details for the new buyer unfortunately , other than what was written on V5C which the DVLA have. My dad is obviously worried that he was possibly given a false address. We contacted DVLA to advise and they stated they didn't have a postcode and when they searched for the street address they couldn't find it, hence the letter asking us to provide further details (which we don 't have) the DVLA just advised us to write on the letter they sent us that we don't have any further details other than those already provided and the date we sold the car.
Should we be worried about anything beyond this?

Keep a copy of everything you send, and get proof of posting from the post office.0

There's no obligation on you to get proof of ID. Just write back to DVLA and say "Very sorry, but that's all we've got." It'll go down as being off you, but "no known keeper".0

How did the person contact your dad to arrange to come and view? If by phone, do you have their number? You could include it in your letter to the DVLA.
Beyond that, you've done all you can. Tell the DVLA everything you can but don't worry beyond that.0 -
He called my dad on his landline so we have no number, mobile or otherwise. He literally came an hour after calling and bought the car there and then. We have no other info sadly.0

Just tell the DVLA everything you can and re-confirm the date the car was sold. If your dad's worrying, ring them back and check that once you send that letter in, you'll get the normal confirmation from them that he's no longer responsible for the car.0

Thanks all for the advice. Put our minds at rest.0
