Is bank transfer the only way you can cash in premium bonds now?

No good old cheque made out to you personally?

You can still ask for cheques, or warrants, as they call the paper they send to you if you ask.

Just browsing through the PB T&Cs, I notice they state:

    90. If we are asked to make a payment by electronic transfer and, after a reasonable period has elapsed, the bank or building society to which payment should have been made says that it has not received the payment, we will make the payment again, unless:

    (a) there was a mistake in any of the details contained in the payment instructions given to us. If this is the case, we will make reasonable efforts to recover the funds; or

    (b) we can show that the payment was in fact received by the bank or building society to which payment should have been made.
My highlighting of the bit that appears relevant to the OP.

I wonder what "reasonable efforts" entails? Maybe they made them by checking that it was a real account... I guess it would need testing by a court.

The OP should also look at this from the viewpoint of someone who may be trying to scam the system. You put in a friend's account number then claim it was a mistake. Meanwhile the friend withdraws, closes account and splits it with you.

Not saying this is your case but possible
