    It's amazing how much effort they put into getting a phone number, they know it's the best tool of harrassment.

    I had a (now satisfied) debt with Lowel from an old CC from Capital One. Years later I took out another card with Capital One and they passed the number I gave them onto Lowel. Luckily it was a voip number I use to appear like a landline (messages forwarded via email etc).

    Like Fermi says they have many databases. An industry tool used to be the UKInfo Discs. These had all edited electoral register information cross referenced with directory enquiries. A handy function was the 'Neighbour search'. This would generate a list of a target's neighbours c/w phone numbers (if listed) etc - perfect for embarassing you into contacting them. There was even a hack to reverse search phone numbers to find addresses.

    Sneaky gits.

    I just don't understand why they can't stick to writing letters. I am in the middle of setting up an alternative mailbox for correspondence, because I do not need the extra stress or worry, as I have been diagnosed with long term depression and had a break down over 5 years ago.

    It has taken me a long time to feel more in control again, there is no way I want to go back...but try to manage things in a better way.

    DCAs don't like letters because:
    1. They are more easily ignored compared to a phone call;
    2. Contents of a phone conversation can be denied (unless you've recorded it);
    3. It puts pressure on the debtor to pay "now" over the phone rather than make a payment in their own time;
    4. It costs them a lot more to post a letter than to make a phone call.
    If you don't want them calling you then send a letter requesting all future correspondence is by mail only. They can be reported if they fail to comply.
