Can my landlord charge me for cheap hobs gone rusty?

I'm moving out of a place I have been at for a year. Generally its kept tidy etc. However the hobs seemed to get really rusty really quickly through no fault of my own. I looked them up and they are cheap £50 ones.

The landlord made a comment the other day about the state of them, blaming me.

Will he/can he charge me for this?

Thanks

  • If he can prove u damaged them outside of what might be considered wear and tear.

If you've made reasonable efforts to keep them clean and they're deteriorating quickly purely because they're cheap and nasty then I'd say that's a wear and tear issue and so LL's responsibility.

If they're deteriorating because you never (or rarely) clean them then that would be your responsibility.

Rust is a natural corrosion so I would imagine the default position in the absence of other evidence is that it is wear and tear.

But none of us can guarantee how the arbitrators would view it.

Could you remove the rust before moving out? You can get something to remove the rust and it should be able to look at good as it looked when you started the tenancy. Then the landlord can't complain about it.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

probably would be cheaper to spend 50 quid (or cheaper on ebay?) , as no doubt the LL will add his labour expenses etc to the cost...

    How can a hob rust?

I have a feeling that the main cause are liquids splashed from cooking, which have not be cleaned in a timely manner...
    Rust is a natural corrosion

Obviously the chemical process is natural. But rust only forms when the metal is subjected to certain conditions that may or may not be 'normal'.

It doesn't matter how much the hob cost, it will only rust if it has been neglected....proper cleaning would ensure no rust or other damage.

I am assuming an inventory was done at the start of the tenancy, and signed?
