Energy Company Advice

Okay, this is going to sound strange, but patience :-)

My partner recently started a new business and was in process of fixing a price with nPower. All fine and good. Last week she got a call from someone claiming to be from nPower, going through the whole process. Turns out they weren't from nPower at all and were from a company called Efficient Trading Solutions Ltd. After she agreed to things, they then started recording the call to go through the contract (recording was e-mailed to us).

Turns out they are some kind of broker for Opus Energy. Opus Energy have refused to let her out of the contract. They evidently think it's normal for the dodgy companies they contract this work out to not to record all calls in full. Please, tell me why an honest company would only choose to record a call part way through? It's obvious it is so they can use unscrupulous tactics.

At this stage, there doesn't seem much anyone can do. Ofgem can't do anything, as it was via a broker. Amazingly, with energy to businesses, it doesn't appear there is any cooling off period at all and contracts can be agreed over the phone.

I know she was being a bit naive to do this on a phone call, but English is her fourth language.

Even today she has had other companies calling her trying to trick her into similar arrangements.

Can anything be done about this? How can this be allowed to happen? I'll fight it as much as I can, if for nothing else other than the principal of it.

Will you cease using this broker?

My daughter in law is going through the same, she has her own shop and was phoned by who she thought was her own energy company. She signed up for direct debit. It wasn't until her own company rang to say sorry you're leaving us that she realised she been duped, now they say she has to keep the contract although she has cancelled the direct with her bank. Then her gas supplier rang and said she was leaving them too ( she wasn't ) What can she do please ?
  • Hi everyone I too have had the same issues where they claimed to be another company and illegally duped me into joining their crook company.

In one day I had about 100 calls from sales, I had to call police and still they rang from local numbers and different numbers. They are exceptionally rude and lie! 2 years I have been fighting them and now they cut off my electric even though I have proof I was ill in hospital after childbirth and that I can't pay my bills without the shop being open. They have charged excess amounts of money due to them over charging. The bill they want from me is over £3000 which they refuse to turn on my electric unless I pay full bill. They charged over £600 to disconnect the supply and want to add another £400 on top of bill to reconnect. They have never taken a meter reading and Iv never received a bill yet they have this magic £3000 bill? This company needs to be stopped in the way they trick clients into signing up. They still don't have my correct name yet signed me up? How is this possible?

There are over 140 same reviews about misleading clients by fake phone calls and claiming to be another energy firm and aggressive behaviour. I tried to cancel with my cooling off period and they blank refused me.

Ofgem want to investigate this company so I need as much evidence as possible.
