Monarch weighing hand luggage

Just a heads up really. Monarch now allow two small items of cabin luggage or one larger item - either option has a total 10kg limit. 10 days ago going out via Gatwick Monarch were weighing hand luggage at the gates and making overweight baggage go in the hold. This was mainly affecting passengers who had a normal small trolley case and a large handbag or small rucksack or beach bag, the trolleys were all being retained before boarding.

anyone with just one normal looking bag or 2 small ones were not being asked to use the scales.

    From Monarch website:
    Hand Baggage

You now have two options when it comes to hand baggage:

Regardless of our policy, Luton Airport currently only allows one piece of hand baggage through security, which is out of our control.

    (a) One piece of hand baggage no bigger than the new slightly reduced size of 56 x 40 x 25cm (there’ll be a size gauge at the airport to check this) and no heavier than 5 kilos, plus a small duty free bag from the departure airport.

    Or

    (b) Two separate pieces of hand baggage, as long as the combined size is no bigger than 56 x 40 x 25cm and the combined weight no heavier than 5 kilos, plus a small duty free bag from the departure airport.

This means there’s no need to choose between your bag and your laptop. And you won’t have to cram everything into one bag at the departure gate. All we ask is that you put small items under the seat in front of you, to leave more space in the overhead lockers for larger bags.

so it's 2 small bags or one 'normal' size bag.

So anyone thinking that they can take 2 hand baggage size pieces are going to be in trouble.

If your flight number begins ZB then the following rules of 10kg apply, and technically you could have 2 bags and a duty free bag as long as when combined they do not go over the weight or size limit: http://www.monarch.co.uk/faq/flights/baggage/hold-checked-in-baggage-charges-scheduled

If your flight number begins with MON then you need to follow these rules, when you will only get 5kg of hand luggage; http://www.monarch.co.uk/faq/flights/baggage/hold-checked-in-baggage-charges-charter

I fly soon with Monarch and have booked flight only on a ZB flight so will get 10kg. They were weighing bags when I flew with them last year too, I think it just depends how full the flight is maybe?
