Insurance for product between the shop and our home

Options
Hi,

On Monday I am buying a digital piano and collecting it from the shop. When I get it home, it will immediately be covered by our home contents insurance policy. But I have a long car journey to get it home, and I'm worried about what cover it has on the way home. I'm mainly thinking about damage in an accident - I hope not to leave it unattended during the journey, so theft is pretty unlikely.

I have established that my motor insurance only covers "personal posessions" up to £100, and that my home contents insurance, while it does cover "items temporarily away from the home" doesn't cover things on their way to the home for the first time.

Has anyone got any idea how I could insure this thing as a one-off? It's basically goods-in-transit insurance, but for one item, on one journey, on one day only.

I'd appreciate any advice. Otherwise I'll be left "winging it" and hoping for the best.

Thanks!

Speak to your Home insurance but normally your home cover would include transportation of your items to your home, between homes when moving house etc.

My home contents insurer *was* NationWide, and they told me it wasn't included. However, having shopped around, I've got a much better quote from DirectLine (cheaper, and better policy), and the policy (and a chat transcript I've saved) state that they will cover me in this case. So I've switched.

    Thanks for the advice.
  • It's also worth noting that some credit cards offer insurance on new items, and you should pay part of the cost of anything expensive with one anyway to get Section 75 cover. Also if someone hits your car and damages anything in it then their insurance has to pay for it.

My first thought was to ask whether your credit card includes insurance on new purchases, but on Googling it seems that they nearly all stopped offering it about 10 years ago, which shows how up to date I am. I think unless you have a business Barclaycard or one or two other obscure ones you'll have little joy there.

Didn't come up on the search I did - maybe I used the wrong terms, or maybe Google could just tell from the age of my computer that I wouldn't qualify for one anyway. :(

Or maybe just that you have more sense than paying £450 a year for a card

    Very obscure, very rarely accepted.
