Default on credit rating - issues with contacting company

So a brief background - recently my and husband applied for a mortgage only to be rejected on my credit history because there is a default on my history. I didn't know what this was, but the gent at the bank kindly showed me the report and said it was something from Next directory and that it shows on their system there is an outstanding balance. I knew that this had been paid off a few years ago, anyway he advised us to contact them to ask them to remove it, check my experian report etc and that we would need to wait 6-12 months for it to re apply for a mortgage once it had been removed.
Anyway, I checked my report and it is down as a default account, though it was paid off in 2012. I do recall missing payments and eventually it was paid off to a debt collection agency that Next had passed it to and I had agreed a payment plan with.
I've consequently contacted Next directory asking them to look at this and see if they can change it from default (its on my experian report as Next rather than the other company). They have come back to see they cannot find any account for me. I've given them my last 5 addresses, date of birth, a screen shot of the experian report that this relates too - and each time they come back with 'nothing found'.
Any advice as to what I do now? I dont have any of the paperwork as we've moved house a couple of times and since it was paid off, I got rid of anything I didnt think I needed. At the moment our position is that we are living with my in-laws, to save money for a house deposit and I became pregnant shortly after we moved in with them, so this whole thing now means we will be back to renting until we can re-apply for the mortgage, so as you can imagine It's been pretty upsetting. Obviously it was my fault that I missed payments to start with, but we have worked really hard the last few years to get straight and back on track with our credit ratings and now this one thing is holding us back. I feel like Next are just going to come back and say 'there isn't anything we can do' since they cant even find the account details!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

As you actually admit that you missed payments etc. the default will stay on your credit file for 6 years.
They wont remove it because its a true record of your credit history.
Sorry.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0
