I don't know about using a smartphone. I have NavFree and others on my Android phone, and it's fine (once I got the sound to work), but you have to faff about with the phone every time you use it; and the phone is slow to pick up GPS; and sometimes the app crashes; and you have to remember to turn off GPS afterwards because it eats battery life; and it's fiddly if you want to use the phone for anything else.
