Should I get a credit card + credit rating

I haven't checked my credit rating but im sure its pretty bad, Ive never had a credit card or any other loans, im 26 and just use my bank account from time to time on small purchases.

To raise my credit rating is it a good idea to get a credit card?

what else can i do to raise my credit rating?
Is there a free way o check your credit rating?

Thanks any info would be great.

If you want to build a credit history (rather than a rating, which is up to each lender to decide), then getting a card, using regularly and paying off in full each month is a good place to start.

Don't pay interest, don't miss payments or go overlimit and never get a payday loan.

Mobile phone contracts and overdrafts get reported to CRAs.
A store card can do the job if you can't get a credit one.

It's vital to be registered on the electoral roll and not to have different active addresses reported to CRAs.
