Google Desktop

Seems an update for google desktop is available.
Box came up inviting me to download the update.
Don't want to do the wrong thing, so thought I should ask you guys whether I should or should'nt download.

My computer is only around 12 weeks old, Vista home basic.

Thank You.

Google Desktop offers nothing that's not built into Vista. Google Desktop on Vista is pointless.
  • Thanks for reply conor.
No point in me downloading what I do not need.

Silly question, but why do they offer these updates when we do not require them.
I know nothing about these things, but do not want to slow down my computer with downloads I do not need.

Google Desktop is mainly for XP, to mimic Vista's desktop

  • No idea about Vista (I'm steering well clear and sticking with XP though I did get an express upgrade disk thrown if for when M$ stop supporting XP...)
But I couldn't survive at work without the ability Google desktop gives me to seartch my 1000s of Outlook emails quickly!
Its great to be able to prove "I told you that 3 months ago you moron!" except toned down slightly....

Very rude reply, and not called for.

Vistas new search engine works far better and quicker at doing that than Google Desktop does. It's also integrated into the OS more and you can search for anything anywhere on the PC from the Start, Search menu or the Search box on any explorer pane. If you do the full HDD indexing, it'll search everything including all documents. Also you can now put tags and descriptions on files so it'll search those too.

In fact the new Vista desktop search is so good that Google have taken the matter to the US Dept of Justice to try and force MS to remove it, claiming it is anti-competitive.

In my mind at least, when companies do that, MS have done it right.
