Yes, Meritian... I'm keen to know too.. I have never considered buying one until now, but have been sceptical about it's alleged multi-uses. Will I end up using it now and again for stubborn stains/dirt or will it be a regular cleaning 'friend' for me...

    I've googled this
http://www.goodhousekeeping.co.uk/tried-tested/tried-tested-steam-cleaners-2014 and http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2608146/Will-hot-new-gadget-make-housework-doddle-Steam-cleaning-got-country-hot-bothered-JENNY-WOOD-eight-best-steam-models-test.html but still none the wiser as to which one I go for... my budget is £150.

I second the advice to buy a steam mop....I bought one for less than £50 on offer in Asda and have been very pleased with it. Mine doesn't have a 'carpet glider' but could still be used to go over a carpet at a push.
I am less enthusiastic about the handheld steamers as I don't find they melt the dirt away as dramatically as the adverts promise....but then mine was only 50p in the Lidl sale!
I had a major blitz round the house yesterday....hoovering, steam mopping, washing all soft furnishings I could and then spraying with a mix of Indorex and Skoosh which is safe on bedding.
You do also need to use an effective treatment on the cat....Advantage or Clear spot can be bought without prescription....vets sell others such as Activyl or Stronghold. No point buying anything where the active ingredient is Fipronil (Frontline) as it is no longer effective for lots of areas.

I would also spray your home with this:
    http://www.vetuk.co.uk/flea-treatments-household-flea-sprays-c-3_419/r-iflea-extra-600ml-can-p-1504

I found it very effective against fleas - regardless of what they say on the tin I ended up using 2 tins!
  • I'm surprised that no-one else is having this problem on here. Maybe the population just migrated to Nott'm as we're just tastier!!:cool:

On another forum I use (dedicated pet one - all species), there are loads of people having problems with fleas this year .... some have had pets 20+ years & never had a problem before :(

I've not treated any of mine for years but have started and I will be doing them certainly until there's been a few good hard frosts

House was done with Indorex at the end of May as well

Maybe it's the weather .... maybe it's because people are still using products with Fiprinol (eg frontline & co) which doesn't seem to work as well now so there's maybe more around

I'd say we've been lucky not to get them - Archie is a prolific mouser & we also have hedgehogs, rabbits, squirrels, badgers, foxes etc so ...... not chancing it just now

I havent used a steam cleaner for fleas yet but I am just about ready to nuke the house so will be steaming tomorrow!

I use a steam cleaner at work,I am a housekeeper and have used the green one - a good all round cleaner but the little brushes are either metal and too harsh or plastic and melt with the heat of the steam, gives a good floor clean ad has the added benefit of a hand held attachment. Not good on glass though so dont believe allof the ads. Keep your receipt, mine went back twice!

The Bissell needs a filter on a regular basis an added expense and only lasted about 4 months.

I am currently impressed with the Vax, so much so I bought my own,it is easy to use and effective and has so far worked without issue every day for a year

I am hard on a cleaner, the house i work in has very large rooms with cream stone floors and 2 dogs, i bought a cheapy cleaner for home which did not do the job at alland was flimsy and ineffective.

I would go with the vax.

I do not use for carpets, I found it made them hot but no cleaner and as work have very expensive wool carpets, the house smelled like sheep!
  • For cat - get stronghold from vets

For yourself get Avon skin so soft original dry oil spray. They wont go near you, same with mozzies on holiday

vet prescribed Advocate as frontline is not working and we also use Provender spot on for worming every month for 6 months to try and get everything under control. Fleas are apparently attracted to oestrogen which explains why my 21 year old DD gets bitten and I don't!!

The fleas are a nightmare this year so wholly endorse advice from others - prescription spray, regular vacuuming and spray inside the vacuum cleaner bag/collector if dyson type as the fleas will live in there!!!

    hi all:

    thanks for your replies.

I'm yet in two minds as to which three new brands to try: Advantage, Stronghold or Advocate (the latter is w/out a prescription). The ones that are obtainable from vets only would be deemed a bit pricey, so I'm wondering if Advocate would be just as effective as the others - what do you lot think?

btw, it's been 2 weeks since the house has been sprayed and i've had about four bites all together from then. I know i didn't spray absolutely everywhere as that would of taken taken forever (too much stuff. yes... i know, causes more hidey areas for those horrid fleas to nest/lay eggs). Still umming and arring about the steam cleaner... I'm torn between the Shark or the Vax now!
