When my two were small we culdn't afford to buy baby food, besides I didn't like what was on the labels.
Breakfasts were things like porridge with a dollop of jam, scrambled eggs and toast, boiled eggs, hm scotch pancakes with whatever fruit that I had, it was usually sliced banana. Marmite on toast
lunch was something like beans on toast or or whatever was left over from dinner the night before
Dinner was whatever we had, I don't cook with salt, I just add to the meal when we eat it.
Mash with veg and a little meat and gravy, or spag bol, cauliflower cheese etcBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

I think breakfast is the easiest meal of the day really, but I made scrambled egg beans and toast this morning, I only gave my two year old a few beans and egg but I put them on top of the toast...needless to say he didn't eat anything but the toast and also avoided the tiny bit of toast with bean juice on it!!
My 10month old gobbled it up...infact he stuffed himself silly. At one point he had a mouth full of egg and a piece of toast (I cut it up to about 8 pieces for him) half hanging out of his mouth...I was about to take it out when he got their first (I expected him to take it out!!) and used his fingers to stuff it in his mouth!!!
I just left him to it.....he was so happy lmaoPeople don't know what they want until you show them.0 -

He probably doesn't like the texture of porridge and weetabix,
At least you know he will eat scrambled egg, beans and toast.Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Thank you will have a look at that link :-) We are trying the Broc & Cau pasta thing above tonight see how that one goes with little one, have to admit though we have spent 99p on the broc / cau mixed box which we would normally have brought Broc for 50p., we are eating the rest but it still means that this meal for him is costing 50p for the Veg where a jar is 50p.
I just don't think it's possible to do healthy meals cheaper then jarsAlthough in the scheme of things this one is pretty cheap xx

It is possible to do it cheaply.
Baked beans or scrambled eggs on toast for breakfast.
Pasta with pieces of ham/chicken/hard boiled egg. I used to make little burgers or meatballs just by squishing minced beef, lamb or turkey with some chopped herbs or garlic.
Any fruit or veg. Grated cheese can be added to anything.
For the week you'd need one tin of beans and half a dozen eggs along with a few slices of bread. £2 maximum.
One pack of pasta £1. Cheese £1. Milk £1. You're only up to £5 so far.
£7 to spend on meat, fruit and veg. Make up batches and freeze or keep in the fridge for the next day.
Don't worry about repetition as long as your baby gets what they need throughout the week. If they eat one chicken breast across 4 meals that's fine.0 -
Thank you, will have to learn to make more pasta dishes. I am terrible I've never cooked it (my OH cooked it tonight although I am sure I would of managed this one)
We are having spag bol for tea next so he can share some of that, not sure what to do for lunch yet. Was hoping to do pan cakes in morning but as I can't sleep I am guessing I will be a bit out of it so it shall most likey be cereal.
I asked on a facebook group about some recipes for 10 month olds I need to go though it and pick the good ones out but I will post them here in next couple days incase anyone is following this thread.People don't know what they want until you show them.0 -
Have a look at the Annabel Karmel website (www.annabelkarmel.com/recipes). Her recipes are written specifically with babies and toddlers in mind and are healthy as well. Some of the recipes are quite cheap and most are suitable for the whole family, or can be tweaked a bit for adults.
Good luck.

I can't think that my DD has ever costed me £12 a week in food and I have never bought a jar or any other "baby/child" specific foods. I wonder if it would be easier to take a look at how the family eats as a whole rather than costing and eating separate things.
Apart from avoiding too much salt, and no honey or whole nuts they can pretty much eat everything else and if you all eat the same meal then a portion size for a 9 month old should be pennies. We Made-it-3 on 28/01/11 with birth of our gorgeous DD.0
