customs/duty sending to the US ?

I have sold a series of items to a buyer in the US and have been trying to find out the limit that I can send before the recipient will be charged duty when they get it in the US, it will make a difference on how many parcels I send.
I have trawled the Royal Mail website, customs and excise site and I must be dim this afternoon because I can't find an answer, can anyone help?
I know I can mark it as a gift and escape duty but I want to do this properly and would prefer to split the win into smaller packets and declare the true value rather than send one large parcel and end up with a disgruntled buyer paying duty or tax or whatever.
