Private renting

Hi everyone

Me and my partner are looking at renting our first place together(I have rented before but this is his first time). I was looking at the possibility of renting privately mainly to avoid the very high fees from agencies. I don't have a clue where to look for private landlords, can anyone point me in the right direction? Also look love to hear from plp that have gone down that route.

I'm planning to do the same thing in 6 weeks or so as I hate letting agents with a passion Sites like upad have listings where you rent direct from the landlord. Gumtree has some and occasionally sites like spareroom will have whole properties. I'm also thinking about putting a postcard up in local corner shops to try and get the attention of local landlords!

depending where u live you could try gumtree.

just make sure that the first person you meet is the landlord and wont do a runner with a deposit that you give them.

ask lots of questions about the property - if they are really the landlord then they wont have a problem with your questions.
  • Letting agents can be bad I agree, I'm not a fan, but there are times when they are useful to have:
Regular opening hours so u can get in touch
Generally know the law ( not usually specifics ) but better than some LLs
    Have (some) reputation to protect
Usually have plumbers etc on the books so jobs in theory get done quicker
Less likely to get 'personal' about the house/flat

But there are disadvantages, a big one being the cost.

Just be very careful of being scammed on sites like Gumtree!
