Ignore the so-called style gurus ... I also like the Passat CC. :)

I would be surprised if a large petrol car like the Passat gives anywhere near 40mpg on short journeys?

The 1.4STI claims 34 urban / 44 combined / 54 highway, so it'll probably do the best part of 30mpg about town if driven carefully.
  • Beauty in the eye etc, 99% of cloned cars sold in the last 10 years do nothing for me.

For long term ownership it might be worth reading up on the (not pocket money fix) electric parking brake problems with Passat.
  • The thing about mileage is that the question should be 'how many miles has it got left in it?', not 'how many miles has it done?'.

There are 150k cars that'll do another 50k easily, and 100k cars that are on their last legs.

As other posters have suggested, go for petrol considering your mileage, or if buying a pre-2006 car, diesels didn't have DPFs then, so your safe on that.

One thing I would suggest though if you're really into money saving is to consider 'bangernomics' - do a search for this term in this forum.

My Dec 2008 diesel doesn't have a DPF (thank goodness!) so worth checking!

I had an 04 reg with one, bloody thing.

BTW another vote for the Passat CC looks.

My Dad nearly bought one, main issue was head space and we both managed to bang our heads getting in the drivers seat. He went for an A4 in the end.
