How long should a pair of trainers last?

Howdy folks.
My wife bought me a pair of etnies for christmas and they are already falling apart. They get minimal wear during the week as I am working, I am bare foot at home and I have some old trainers for gardening/walking the dog.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Etnies-RVM-Low-Mens-Size/dp/B00AF93QK2/
I bought a pair of etnies june 2011 and they are still going strong. In fact on my feet at this very moment in time are a pair of etnies from 2008.
The difference being the soles on the older pair were stitched on and the new pair only glued.
So my question... How long should I expect trainers to last especially ones that intended for skateboarding (which I don't)?
Thanks in advance

The answer to your question is "a reasonable time".Twisted_Spirit wrote: »Howdy folks.

Price needs to be taken into account, as do other things.
I notice that Amazon sell Etnies from under £20 to over £80.
Another question might be "how long is a piece of string"?

Another question might be: were they fake?
I've never heard of any brands, so never heard of yours, but - have you been into a real shop to see if they have the ones like you bought? Are those soles glued? Are all their soles stitched?
I'd start with whether they were fake and, if so, then it's a Trading Standards complaint to at least get the fakers prosecuted.... although you might not get anything back from that at least you'll have stopped them doing it.0 -

They were £52.91 at the time of purchase although the price for my size seems to have gone up (£76.88) so they aren't a cheap shoe.
Would you recommend speaking to Amazon and confirming with them as to what reasonable time would be?0 -

They were sold by Amazon EU Sarl at the time of purchase. It seems they no longer sell them themselves.0 -
Ok, Amazon have been wonderful and have agreed to take them back for a refund.
Also I think the representative thought a little highly of himself
