Is this a Vodafone scam??

Hi,
I might be worrying unnecessarily here but I just wanted to check. I just had a call from 'Vodafone' saying I was eligible for some deal or another and they asked me a couple of security questions. They asked for my date of birth and postcode which I gave them. I don't normally give personal details on the phone like this but they already knew my name and that I had an account with Vodafone so I just assumed it was legitimate. I obviously would not give bank details or anything like that over the phone. Now the problem is as soon as I gave them this information, they hung up. I phoned Vodafone to ask them if this was a legitimate phone call and he said my records did not show that I had been contacted and confirmed that it could not have been anyone from Vodafone.
Does anyone know what this could be??
If its a scam, can they do anything with just my date of birth and postcode?? :undecided
Thanks

If they have other info on you like phone number & address, these details might be used to access your account, or change the account address or even upgrade/order a new contract in your name.
I know when I call my provider, DOB & postcode are 2 of the things they use to verify your iD.
I'd chat to Vodafone again to share your concerns?0 -
Stick the phone number of the caller in [STRIKE]google[/STRIKE] your favourite search engine and see what it throws up.0

I suggest if anyone calls you and asks for details that are personal, suggest that because of the DPA you have to be careful and protect your interests.
You'll probably find someone has or will be applying for a mobile in your name (but not vodafone). The same phishing is the same on emails and calls - just because you are a customer is more good luck than anything else.0 -
Well they know your date of birth, postcode, the fact thay you're a Vodafone customer, your sex, a very close proximity via your postcode which they could then simply search the Electoral register to obtain your full address.
So when you ask if they can do anything with 'just' your date of birth and postcode, the answer is, you've already given out much more information than that for a fraud to possibly take place!
Never, ever confirm anything to anybody over the phone.0 -

yep always ask me when they contact me0 -
If any organisation with whom I have any kind of account phones me and wants to take me through security, I point out that they could be anyone and insist on phoning them back.
I would always phone the official number of course, and not any number that they may choose to supply me with.0 -
Ok, thank you for the advice. This will be a lesson if anything like this happens in the future. It was stupid of me to give out my information but I was not in the right frame of mind at the time.0
