Mortgage protection plan help

Iv a friends provident mortgage protection plan that was started when buying my first property in 2007. I remember taking it out as I remember the mortgage advisor (countrywide mortgage services) telling me I needed it with the mortgage and we rushed through it late in the evening as it was in the news that mortgage rates were predicted to go up on the Thursday. I also have my mortgage details on my first mortgage. It was with abbey and it states the only insurance I need is building insurance.
Can I reclaim this money? If so how do I do it and do I claim through countrywide or friends provident?

Many thanks

The cover could easily have been a condition of the mortgage offer you were given.

If you have a complaint it goes to the company who sold you the insurance, not the provider.
  • I have the original mortgage offer and it does not mention I needed any cover. I only needed building insurance.

In which case, you now plan to make a "hearsay" complaint that you were wrongly told the PPI was compulsory. This is an easy rejection for the Bank because you can provide no evidence that you were told this and the Bank will refute your claim.

Only if the Bank find other errors with the sale of the PPI will your complaint stand any chance of success.

    Most mortgage PPI complaints fail.

Friends Provident are a life assurance company. Are you sure this is PPI and not life assurance?

You quite possibly did. Many mortgage brokers require you to purchase insurance through them to enable them to give free mortgage advice. A model that is allowed as long as the insurance is suitable. It wont appear on documentation as it has nothing to do with the lender.

First of all we need to know what type of insurance it is. It probably isnt PPI seeing as its Friends Provident. Life assurance is most likely but it could be (or include) critical illness cover and Income protection.

Secondly, what evidence do you have to support your allegation? This is important as if you have no evidence then your complaint will be assessed on suitability only. Hence why we need to know what you have and then we can discuss whether it was suitable.

The majority of mortgage insurance complaints fail. This is because it is normal to protect yourself and spouse/partner and family as the consequences of your mortgage going unpaid are significant.

You have just said yourself you only needed the buildings insurance. So basically you voluntarily took the life insurance (not PPI).

Why should this be refunded? They aren't giving out free money.

Who's asking for free money? I however am asking whether I am entitled to refund for the mortgage protection plan I was told I had to take out, but have recently discovered wasn't required to get a mortgage.

I'm not 100% sure so will check when I get home but I think it was protection against injury, illness and death

This is not PPI. It's Life assurance from a Life Assurance company.

I can't see how you can argue it was mis-sold.
