payments made when not in credit

hello i am new here so please be gentle.
i tried to buy something yesterday and the pin machine said incorrect pin, tried again and it said card locked.
called Halifax one this morning to get a new pin and was told i was over my card limit... doh...
paid a chunk off it today and started talking to the operator about payments made.
it looks like one purchase put it over my limit and another one went out the next day when it was already over limit...

how can a payment be made when the card is already over its limit.???

they have charged me £12 and will possibly charge me again next month,, how and why...???

The limit doesn't necessarily prevent further spend. Especially underfloor transactions.

It maybe the system has a small margin to allow you to go over your limit which may prevent embarrassment when the machine declines your payment for insufficient funds.

Its possible or used to be possible to take money from a cashpoint when you have already taken it out at another machine.

The 2 systems obviously didnt update each other instantly.

Not every credit card transaction is checked live. Small ones can be stored and then processed at the end of the day.

You must not go over your credit limit. We can decline Transactions that are over that limit. But, if as a service to you, we authorise them, you have to pay the charges in condition 7 for going over your limit. If you try and make a payment for which you do not have credit, we may refuse to carry out the Transaction.
