This is the bloody problem, people don't just pick up a job like a library book any more. It is damn hard to get anything.

To be honest, that's how's it's always been. The job market has always been competitive and it's never been as simple as picking something up off the shelf.

For most jobs the number of candidates vastly out numbers the vacancies, so statistically it's more likely people receive many more rejections than job offers.

Relatively few people have the confidence and ability to simply get the first job they lay eyes on.

I've just spent 18 months trying to get a job, I made literally hundreds of applications and had in excess of fifty interviews. And just one job offer. The uncomfortable reality is that you simply have to keep plugging away at it.

Application and interview preparation is also very important.

Just a thought here but at the interviews have you unwittingly come across as using the job as a stop gap until you start the PCGE ?

If I was an employer that would make me think twice about employing you.

Another thought, have you thought about working via an agency for TA jobs? I know someone who does this whilst looking for a permanent role.

The other thing is to look in shop windows such as the spar, local newsagents etc.

As for duchy's comments I think it was unfortunate that you put the comment about not wanting the job of the year followed by the comment re call centre & retail work jobs....just my take on it

At interviews for TA jobs, I don't say anything about teaching. I mention I did my degree due to an enormous love of the subject and future-wise only talk about wanting to do the L3 TA course in my own time to give me that bit extra.

I haven't got the maths yet so can't do it this year and its a bit late now, everything will be gone. I'm not sure how to phrase my past experience into a customer service role though I'm sure there are a lot of interchanageable skills.

I didn't intend to offend anyone and I apologise if I did.
Up and onwards to the future!

Good luck with the maths- concentrate on that for this week! When do you get your results? INo harm in contacting PGCE places just to see if they have anything good for you this year rather than next.

You might also be attractive for maternity cover - you have a reason for wanting a one year post which will reassure employers you won't jump ship if something permanent comes up.

Try not to get down hearted, that is the only thing that can hold you back.

Also in the next academic year SEN is changing but statemented children will still require a teaching assistant for their allocated hours, the only area where this is changing is school action and school action plus, who even at the moment aren't legally entitled to a teaching assistant. So don't discount jobs in that area, if you haven't already you could look for work as a cover supervisor, not only would the pay be fairly good it will be fantastic experience before you take your PGCE.

I've not spent time leisurely but I feel so poor about this. Please, any help?

Errr...and I've just "translated" that into:

"I have been working hard, but I do feel bad about this. Can anyone give me any help please?" and think this would be a better way to phrase it and am wondering which of these two ways you normally "speak"/write in and think it would be more appropriate to do so in the second way, rather than employers having to "translate" to see what you mean.

Speaking/writing in the way you did here would cause me to think "I'm not going to translate and I won't expect my customers to do so either" and reject your application and look at the next one instead and I expect that would apply to every career and many jobs.
