Nuisance calls - target providers!

The present situation, where every device supposedly provided to target nuisance callers is circumvented, will never stop until the emphasis on campaigning is changed.

The facts:
 TPS simply does not work anymore
 Call barring is ineffective and costs YOU money despite this
 Ex-directory also costs, and is defenseless against random call generators

Providers actually don't care yet (they still make money and are not penalized for not providing even BASIC defenses for free or at least at very low cost).

At the present rate of progress, PROVIDERS won't be forced to take action until WE (the customers) start getting 24 nuisance calls a day. (Personally I now get between 1 and 2 EVERY DAY).

THIS HAS TO STOP.

Proposal 1 - Positive Call Vetting
I would actually pay for this service! Provide me with an internet login page that allows me to list numbers I DO WANT calls from and block everything else. This is pretty much the ideal scenario, and I suspect would fit perfectly with how most people would want to use their home phone. Obviously, I would assume that certain specific essential services, such as the service provider themselves, and perhaps the police, would be given a mechanism to legally and correctly circumvent this.

Proposal 2 - Automatic International Call Blocks
I think the ability to automatically reject ALL incoming international calls should be a free option - it would be TRIVIAL for a provider to do this and should not cost us a dime! For most of us, there are other ways for friends and family to contact us from abroad that are significantly cheaper than calling the home phone! Thus receiving international calls is largely a redundant service for most home phone users anyway!

Proposal 3 - Automatic Number Unknown / Withheld Blocks
I really don't see why this is not the "default" for home phones. Can anyone identify a legitimate reason for someone calling your home phone via a service that withholds or obfuscates the caller ID? Again, there is in my view no plausible reason other than the providers making excessive profits for the present paid-for blockers, all of which fail to properly block these kinds of call. This is just usury behavior by the providers and should be slapped down.

Please respond to this post if you agree (or disagree) with any of these proposals. Perhaps we could redirect the campaigning to those who have to listen (providers) rather than those who don't give a damn (the abusers). For many abusers the (low) risk of fines is just absorbed as "running costs". And you can be assured that these abusers don't care about the costs of number withholding, auto-dialing and even the time-wasting or abusive answering mechanisms of their victims because they'll take advantage of the "free call" options provided by their own providers to hook up to their automated computerized caller robots!

I'd be particularly keen to hear from representatives of providers such as BT, Virgin, Sky - and even the one-time arch-abusers themselves: Talk-Talk.

Lots of people have taken control already and done almost everything (and more) you mention by being responsible for their own number.

Are you in the UK? I've never heard of ex-directory costing anything and call barring is free with most of TalkTalk's deals. Like most call barring the number of numbers you can bar so a standalone device (like the CPR) is the only way to go and it's easy.

TPS has never worked it was always a joke.

If we were to get what you're asking for from these providers we'd need a GCHQ in every town.

I'm sure the government are working on that.

The problem is that a small minority of people are gullible enough to buy from these cretins and the ratios work for them. A sustained campaign by the majority to keep them talking long enough to make these calls uneconomical would probably have more effect.
  • One of the best ways to avoid receiving nuisance calls is to stop giving out your number to all and sundry.

The OP says he's receiving between one and two calls a day. Myself, on the other hand, receive between one and two calls a month.

    Why the difference?

Well, to start with, I don't put my real number on anything on the internet or anything else if I don't want to receive a phone call from them. Even returning an item to a shop can result in a request for a phone number.

So, if you don't want nuisance phone calls, make a start by keeping your phone number to yourself whenever possible.
